ActiveSpace/.Net Space Beginners Guide

0845 058 9009

Activespace is a legacy service hosted on Zen’s Windows 2000 based servers.  It allows for easy design and upload abilities associated with Microsoft Frontpage, as full Frontpage 2002 server extensions come preinstalled.

What do I need to do to get it?

Activespace is nolonger available from Zen.  For details of our current hosting services please visit http://zen.co.uk/hosting/

What is supported on Activespace?

  • Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Extensions pre-installed, supporting FrontPage 2002, FrontPage 2000, FrontPage 98 and Visual InterDev with Advanced Author Permissions.
  • Full ASP scripting access for programming in VBScript and Jscript
  • Uploadable MS Access 2000 or MS Access 97 database for creation of powerful data-driven sites
  • Multiple "DSN-less" ODBC connections to your databases to enable ASP access using ADO
  • Soft Artisans version 2.3 ASP File Upload Component
  • Very detailed Web hit statistics graphs accessible via a password protected area. Optional daily, weekly, and monthly stats e-mails included

What is supported in .Net space?

All the above features are available on .net space as well as the features below.

  • .NET Framework v1.1 installed, allowing ASP.NET applications to be supported
  • Mobile Internet Toolkit v1.0 installed, allowing mobile .NET Web applications to be supported.
  • Microsoft® Internet Explorer WebControls Version 1.0 installed.

How do I upload files to the space using Publisher?

Once you have designed your site click on File and Publish Web.
On the screen that pops up input your site as: http://www.mysite.zenwebhosting.com , where mysite is replaced with your actual sitename.
The next screen will ask for your username and password, which you should fill in.

How do I upload files to the space using FTP?

Any FTP software is fine for this purpose. SmartFTP is recommended as it is easy to use, includes lots of advanced features and is free! See www.smartftp.com to download a copy.
A couple of other free FTP clients suitable for the purpose are LeechFTP and WS-FTP.
A separate guide to using FTP to upload files is available in the Knowledge Base.

You can do this from any computer connected to the Internet.  There is no need to be on a Zen IP address.

What can I use the space for?

In addition to standard HTML Web pages, with files and images, you can also include asp pages that run scripts written in VBscript or Jscript. You can upload Access 2000 or 97 databases to the server for your scripts to interact with, making the space suitable for interactive sites including elements such as forums, guestbooks, form e-mailers, shopping karts, searchable databases and much more.

However, you should note that you cannot execute programs on the server – you only have script access for asp (and asp.net on .net space.) This means that cgi, php and perl cannot be used, so if you require this you you should consider a cPanel hosted package instead. For details see http://www.zenwebhosting.com/unix.aspx

What will my Web site's address be?

You will get an address in the form of http://www.mysite.zenwebhosting.com where your site can be viewed on the Internet. (The username: mysite can be specified when ordering) Additional domain names can also be pointed to your space if required. Once the A-record is pointed to the server email us on support@zen.co.uk to point it to your actual Web space.

What additional features are there?

A comprehensive Webstats package is included in the form of Deepmatrix Livestats. To access this go to: http://www.mysite.zenwebhosting.com/webstats/

You will need to put the Site ID as www.mysite.zenwebhosting.com and then fill in the username and password, as provided in your Technical Details e-mail. (Replace mysite with your actual site name)

An additional component in the form of Soft Artisens File-up 2.3 is installed, allowing your scripts to upload files to the server. You can download the help file for this component from:
http://www.zenwebhosting.com/assets/chm/safileup.chm

What are the files and directories I've found in my space?

Some sample files and directories are pre-loaded, which you may wish to use or just delete.

The sample directories with non-default permissions are:

  • A Data directory, which has permissions set to be user writable but not readable (for placing databases in)
  • A Maintenance directory, which has anonymous access removed (so you will need your username and password to access it through the Internet
  • An Upload directory which is writable and also readable.

If you wish permissions to be changed on a directory on your site you should email support@zen.co.uk.

Some sample scripts are pre-loaded (and a few folders associated with them)

These include:

  • A login script to secure a folder, with pages to add, delete and edit users with Access + a database containing the details of these users
  • A Form mailback script which uses CDONTS to send the mail.
  • An upload script which allows upload of files to the upload folder through a web browser.

Note that these scripts are provided without support.
