Ethernet Modem or Router/Modem Setup

0845 058 9009

When installing an Ethernet Modem or Router/Modem you will need to ensure that the physical connections are established correctly and that your machine is configured to detect the connections.

Physical connection check list:

  • The computer must have an Ethernet network interface - this could be an internal network card, a PCMCIA card, or an external USB device.
  • The computer and modem should be connected to each other using a patch cable, rather than a crossover cable.
  • The modem wire supplied with the modem should be connected to the ADSL socket on the back of the modem, and the ADSL socket on the DSL Filter.

Operating System check list:

  • Ensure your network card or USB device drivers are installed correctly.  If your computer came with a network card installed, the operating system should have installed the correct drivers already.
  • The computer should be configured to obtain its IP address automatically (by DHCP).
  • If you have more than one network card, ensure that you have configured the correct network card for the connection to your ADSL modem.
  • Disable automatic dialing if your computer has previously been used on a dial-up connection.  In Windows this can be done by opening Internet Explorer then clicking Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Never dial a connection.  In Mac OS X open System Preferences -> Network and set the location to Automatic.
  • Ensure any firewall software you use is set to allow the connection to the ADSL modem.  When you first install the device, disable the firewall completely.

Once you have checked all of the above, refer to the manual provided with your hardware.  If you have purchased your hardware from Zen you will find all you need in our Knowledge Base.  Basic guides are also included from some unsupported hardware.
