Introduction to connecting your network
A network connection to the Internet allows all the machines on your network to access e-mail and the Web through a single ISDN or modem connection. Sharing a single connection amongst all your network machines is efficient and cost-effective, as well as being one of the most reliable and secure ways to access the Internet.
What do you need?
- Connection
You will require an ISDN2e or BT Business Highway line on your premises. For BT connection via ISDN, please see the BT Web site. Call charges will be billed separately by your Telecoms provider at local rate.
- Network
All your machines will need to be networked and have the TCP/IP Protocol installed. If you need help with this, or any other aspect of your network installation, please contact Zen on 0845 058 9080, so that we can put you in touch with one of our local partners.
- Mail Server PC
If you have more than 3 or 4 machines on your network, you will need a server to deliver mail. You may choose to use a server that is also used for other things, such as file and print serving, or you may choose to use a dedicated server for mail.
How does it work?
Zen’s Network account includes a fast reliable connection needed to Internet-enable your network. It is important to realise that the Network account itself is only one component of a complete solution. This will provide e-mail, Web, and other Internet services to each of your network users. In addition to a Network account you will need:
- Connection Device
Zen recommend purchasing an ISDN router.
NB// For connection via modem or ISDN Terminal Adapter, equipment should be bought from your usual computer supplier.
- Domain name (included)
As well as providing your company with its default Web site address and corporate identity for the Internet, a domain name is needed primarily to allow your e-mail to be delivered. All e-mail to your domain will be transferred to your own mail server, and individual users on your network will be able to collect their mail from the local mailserver as required.
- Mail server
You will need a Mail Server software package to provide e-mail access to each user on your network. Zen recommends MDaemon from our associate company, Zen Software.
- Network Installation
If required, one of the Network Consultants registered with our Zen Partner Programme can visit your site and take responsibility for the complete configuration of your network's Internet connection. Your organisation's requirements for e-mail and Web access can be assessed prior to configuration and the optimum set-up properly determined. You can check for locally available Partners at our Zen Partner Programme Web site or call us on 0845 058 9080 to discuss your requirements so that we can recommend a suitable provider.
Options
- For added functionality, a proxy firewall may also be desirable, to provide facilities such as usage auditing and Web caching. WinGate offers a cost effective network sharing and firewall solution for small to medium-sized networks. WinGate is a powerful, full-featured proxy server that has been a market leader for several years.
- There is also the option to have an ISDN channel bonding facility (free of charge) to achieve 128kbps transfer rates, although this will double call charges during periods when the capacity of a second line is used.
- The Employee Dial One option provides fully-featured Dial One accounts for your employees at half the normal price!
Zen's Network Consultants are always ready to discuss your requirements, or suggest the most practical system for your company, and a registered Zen Partner can be recommended for on-site consultation or installation if required. Once your service is up and running, you will have free access to Zen's expert support team for any day-to-day problems or queries - and our friendly business advisers are never more than a phone call or e-mail away.
For network administrators who prefer to configure and maintain their own Internet Access and mail systems, Zen’s network accounts can be combined with whichever components are chosen. The minimum system would consist of a network account and a domain name.
